Two decades of tournament success
Every year, Courage! Saar-Lor-Lux e.V. members take part in national and international LGBTQIA+ sporting events, where we regularly celebrate athletic success. These events are hosted by LGBTQIA+ sports clubs – including our own Courage! Open, held in Saarbrücken in 2003, 2005, 2007 and regularly again since 2015. On top of that come the big multi-sport events: Eurogames, Gay Games and Outgames.

The Eurogames
are hosted every year, in years without Gay Games, by the EGLSF (European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation) in a different European city. So that more cities get a chance to bid, "large" Eurogames take place only every 4 years (2000, 2004, 2008 …), featuring over 20 sports and more than 4,000 participants. In between, "small" Eurogames are held, for which hosts must offer the "Big 5": volleyball, football, swimming, long-distance running and badminton, plus two further sports of the host's choosing.
The idea behind the Gay Games
was born with Tom Waddell, a US Olympic decathlete (Mexico City, 1968). Under the motto "Give your personal best!", people from all over the world were meant to pursue their love of sport without reservation about their sexual orientation, and to take part in an international event regardless of athletic ability. A grassroots sporting event mainly for gay men and lesbians was born.
2006: Gay Games Chicago vs. Out Games Montréal
After the Gay Games Federation (FGG) originally awarded the 2006 Gay Games to Montréal, the host was stripped of the games in November 2003 – the dispute centred on expected attendance and financial control. Team Montréal went on to independently host the "Out Games" and founded the international federation GLISA. 2006 thus saw two major multi-sport events: the Gay Games in Chicago (15–22 July) and, a week later, the Out Games in Montréal (29 July – 5 August), which drew the larger international turnout. Following the short-notice cancellation of the 2017 Outgames in Miami, the federation GLISA was subsequently dissolved.
2006: Montréal, Canada – "We Play For Real"
Never before had Team Courage! Saarland taken part in an international event with so many members: 38 women and men crossed the Atlantic and competed in badminton, swimming, inline skating, the 10 km run, half marathon and athletics. At the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, our team was the first to enter, welcomed by ambassadors Martina Navrátilová and Mark Tewksbury. Sport-wise, it remains the most successful Games for Team Courage! Saarland to date.
